YWCA Clark County Starts New Women's Leadership Center

YWCA Clark County is kicking off its new Women's Leadership Center, with a series of classes beginning February 13.

Educating and empowering teenagers will be the center’s first focus of this year's classes and workshops. The project is a partnership with Girls, Inc.

PSU Graduate Employees Union Created

Several hundred members of Portland State University’s new Graduate Employees Union gathered on campus today, to officially announce the creation of the union, and request neutrality from the University’s administration.
The new union is comprised of over eight-hundred graduate employees, who organized in support of fair wages, affordable healthcare, and reasonable workloads.
The members delivered their request for neutrality to University President Wim Wiewel.
The request also calls for the administration to respect the new union’s right to organize.

St. Johns Residents Protest Plans for Ivy Island

The future of the signature traffic island in St. Johns called Ivy Island is currently up in the air.
Developer Farid Bolouri is working with the Portland City Council to remove the traffic island to make room for a new apartment complex.
But residents are not happy about this change to the Gateway of St. Johns.

CA Porter Ranch Methane Leak

Local air quality regulators joined the list of petitioners taking legal action against the Southern California Gas Company yesterday.
They allege that negligence has been the cause of the methane leak that began last October. That leak isn’t expected to be contained until the end of February.
The gas utility is a subsidiary of Sempra Energy, and according to data at Open Secrets, seven members of congress are shareholders.
Between lobbying expenditures and campaign contributions, the company has spent more than thirty million dollars influencing Washington since 1992.
Dr. Astrid Caldas is the expert on climate change at the Union of Concerned Scientists .
She spoke with KBOO reporter Robin Ryan about the impact the leak is having on climate change projections.
She also discussed what changes in regulatory policy might be on the way as a result.

Oregon Abortion Rights Challenged by OR Right to Life

In Texas this week a grand jury cleared a Planned Parenthood clinic on charges it had sold aborted fetuses.
The panel also indicted two California anti-choice activists on charges of tampering with a governmental record.
That’s a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
Meanwhile, Oregon Right to Life is working to place an initiative on the November ballot that would ban state funding for abortions.
The group last fall raised enough signatures to gain a ballot title for the measure.
KBOO News spoke today with Planned Parenthood of the Columbia Willamette’s President and CEO Stacy Cross about how the organization is responding.

Montrose 9 Attorney Speaks About Civil Disobedience Trial

In November 2015 nine activists blocked transport outside Spectra Energy's facility in an effort to stop work on a natural gas pipeline set to run through New York State.  The nine individuals were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct for their action.  The case is set to go to trial on February 3rd.  For more on the groups action and on the upcoming trial KBOO's Jared Dancler spoke with the Montrose 9's attorney, Martin Stolar.

Malheur Refuge Occupation Enters Fourth Week

The occupation of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge in Harney County, by an armed group of self-styled militia men from out of state, is now entering its fourth week.
A community meeting to discuss the occupation, scheduled for today in Burns, was canceled by Harney County Judge Steve Grasty.
Judge Grasty cited safety concerns as the primary reason for the cancellation.
KBOO’s Paul Roland is on the ground in Burns, along with Arun Gupta, who’s covering the story for the website Raw Story. I spoke with Paul to get more information on what’s been going on in Harney County.

US Supreme Court Nixes North Dakota Abortion Law

The Supreme Court today refused to hear an appeal by the state of North Dakota regarding that state’s extremely restrictive abortion law.
This leaves a lower court decision in place, which found that North Dakota’s abortion law was unconstitutional.

Tufts TPP Report Estimates 750K Jobs Eliminated

A study issued by Tufts University shows the Trans Pacific Partnership could eliminate an estimated 750,000 jobs around the world, whether or not they’re in countries participanting in the agreement.
