Al Stewart is a marvellous songwriter storyteller and performer. He has a knack for delicately woven tales of well-known and lesser known but equally intriguing historical people and events, ranging from the Russian soldier sent to a concentration camp after the German army 's retreat, the 16th Century prophecies of Nostradamus, and dinner with Benjamin Franklin. He will be in concert January at the Walters Cultural Arts Center in Hillsboro in an acoustic setting with dazzling guitarist Dave Nachmanoff. We'll have Al introduce some of the songs himself via a taped phone interview. Join me as history comes to life in song.

////    NOTES   ////

*1 This is the Benny Goodman Quartet & they're all great on this classic Carnegie Hall live 1938 recording. Teddy Wilson on piano who set's the whole thing up, Lionel Hampton on vibes who takes it way away, Benny on clarinet who snatches it back & underneath it all the inevitable drum beat of Gene Krupa. If this doesn't get a smile on your face tell please me what will.

*2 Billy Collins is a 2 term poet laureate of the US (2001-03) & has been called our most popular poet, as opposed to our most understood poet who, according to Dick Cavett, is Rod McKuen - I always thought it was Black Bart the Wells Fargo stage coach robber (1875-83) & self proclaimed Po8.

*3 The Nee Ningy band worked the folk, old time festivals & colleges on the east coast from 1978-81. Not a guitar but a harmonica centric band with blues, Cajun, Celtic influences, among lots of others. Search for them on You Tube to get a small taste of what it must have been like to see them live.

//// NOTES ////

*1 a memorable Paul Boles story that tips Vatican 2 (Catholic Church reform - dropping the Latin mass among other changes) on it's head.

*2 I've always been a sucker for guitar & tuba duets.

*3 Maquiladoras are the factories in the "free trade zone" established by United States manufacturers to take advantage of cheap Mexican labor & avoid any import fees bringing their goods back into the US.

*4 A song that foretells the coming year and is always right.

/// Notes ///

*1 Once you hear a tuba & banjo in Goldfinger you wonder why something so obvious never occurred to the composer. Everyone agrees Stampfel is a genius, it's just that nobody knows what kind.

*2 The Beau Brummels are where the San Francisco sound started. Sylvester Stewart the Sly Stone of Sly & the Family Stone was the engineer on the session.

*3 I sometimes get the feeling that asking Rev. Davis to play the blues is like asking your ex-alcoholic grandfather to show you how he used to drink. This probably is a partial explanation of why we like to hear him play the blues. But Dave Van Ronk says that he never really played it all the way through. Maybe it was as though playing the whole thing correctly would bring that person back to life and destroying the Reverend completely. & if you took his guitar lessons would you play this well?

*4 Proof positive that "The Duke" loved us all - madly.

*5 There's something absolutely unique about a Jesse Winchester shuffle that just makes you want to get up out of bed & dance on a cold floor.

*6 Steve Mann was never that well known and then dropped out of sight for years. He was re-discovered early this century and recorded some new stuff as well as re-releasing his older material. My favorite of his was this live album from the 60's. He plays guitar like most folks would like to play piano. He died the middle of this year. RIP Steve & thanks.

*7 Odetta puts all the power & melancholy & hope she possesses into this simple little gospel song & she sounds like she's got all kinds of power & melancholy & hope to spare. We need all of that all year round but particularly in this season.

*8 A twelve string guitar intro with a musical saw back in the mix throughout - how sweet the sound. If these guys ever come thru town see them no matter what.

*9 I think the guitar player on this version channeled Robbie Fulks' guitar style & he gets real close.

*10 The Texas Sheiks is a new musical project for Geoff Muldaur. It appears to be an ensemble and Muldaur is, in addition to everything else he is, an arranger and comfortable in a group (not fronting for it or hiding in it).

6/12/09 on Dawn breakers

6/12/09 on Dawn breakers Breakdown I thought you played a song by Rosalie Sorrels with a title like "Hey Friend" but could not find it on the play list. "Sweet Loving Friendship" on Borderline heart on her website was as close as I could find. When you have an opportunity to reply and let me know the actual song title, album title ,lyrics or any such would be appreciated. Thanks! I really enjoy your show!
