Bread and Roses is a collective of women identified radio activists. We offer feminist public affairs programming. We give voice to those working for social justice and equity, globally and locally. We strive to challenge systems of oppression. All this, and we have fun!

Bread and Roses highlights the achievements of women artists, activists, athletes, scholars and innovators.We strive for programming excellence and collaborative efforts, providing access and training to women.

 Join host Nico on Bread and Roses October 9 for a talk with members of Circus Artemis -- Portland's All-Women Circus!   

Taking a cue from a legendary "strong woman," Portland's female circus artists have united under a common goal -- to blow audiences away with amazing feats of strength, skill and beauty.  The circus will debut October 16-18.  

We'll talk with creators and performers from Circus Artemis about the creation of the circus, traditional roles for women in circus performance, and how they're breaking barriers with the new show.

In the spring of 2004, Maria, a Greek Cypriot, and Zehra, a Turkish Cypriot, cross to opposite sides of the green line, which has divided Cyprus since the war of 1974, to visit family homes they have not seen for thirty years. Thus begins the personal journey of these women haunted by war and pain, but searching for reconciliation and common ground. On the eve of the U.N. referendum to reunite the divided island, many buried stories from the past emerge.

It's that time of year again - KBOOs Bread and Roses Collective, with hosts Carole and Nico, is set to bring you the CHICKEN TALK SHOW, a 2 hour special this Friday, May 15, 2009 from 6-8pm.  Guests include Lisa Ewing, a chicken trainer at the Avian Medical Center. She'll do a live, on-air chicken training demo and will answer callers' questions about chickens. Growing Gardens will be there too. They sponsor the yearly "Tour De Coops," a tour of backyard chicken coops in Portland. And: chicken stories, chicken songs, and other surprises await you.

Guantanamo Family Stories-3

British-born Mozzam Begg spent a total of 3 years imprisoned at US-run prison camps at Guantanamo, Bagram and Kandahar. His book, Enemy Combatant, details the horrendous conditions he suffered, including 2 years in solitary confinement. He also writes about relations with US prison guards and interrogators. Since his release, Mozzam Begg has campaigned tirelessly for the closure of Guantanamo Bay. In this interview with Bread and Roses, Mr. Begg talks about his family's activism during his imprisonment.

Poet Activist Sunni Patterson on V-Day in New Orleans

Activist, poet and healer Sunni Patterson speaks with Bread & Roses from the Tenth Annual V-Day celebration in New Orleans.  The annual V-Day event is an international celebration of ending violence against women and girls, and this year honors the women of New Orleans and the Gulf South.  Ms. Patterson, a native of New Orleans, was part of a panel that presented at the V-Day events on April 11.       This audio includes a poem and interview.

Community Runs Free Adult Health Clinic

The North by Northeast Community Health Center opened in response to the medical needs of Hurricane Katrinia survivors and of the medically uninsured here in Portland.  This audio features interviews with Dr. Jill Ginsberg, Pastor Mary Overstreet Smith, and Suzy Jeffreys a year and a half after the center's opening.  They describe the North by Northeast Community Health Center and its roots in taking action in the face of injustice.
