Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control

Marjorie Cohn is the past president of the National Lawyers Guild and a professor at Thomas Jefferson School of Law, where she teaches criminal law and procedure, evidence, and international human rights law. She lectures throughout the world on human rights and US foreign policy. She writes extensively. Her last article is titled "Killer Drone Attacks Illegal, Counter-Productive."

The progressive activist Medea Benjamin is co-founder of Code Pink and Global Exchange. She visited Afghanistan shortly after the US invasion in 2002 and learned the reality behind "precision bombs." Benjamin just published a book called "Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control," looks at who is producing drones and who the victims are. It also examines the domestic use of drones.

Portland Lesbian Choir 25th Anniversary Concert and Celebration! Tune in to hear all about this celebratory concert and the community achievements of the PLC.

The concert Saturday June 23rd at 7:30 pm at the Scottish Rite Temple will feature songs ranging across the decades from the Captain and Tennile and Sweet Honey era to Lady Gaga and Beyonce, showcasing our multi-generational, talented group that loves-to-sing! There will be special surprise guests too, and Choir alum DJ Lauren will spin the dance. We also will be premiering a new commissioned work from Aurora Director and local composer, Joan Szymko supported by a grant from RACC.

Koreen Brown on culturally responsive and relevant instructional practices.

Tune in this Friday to hear Koreen Brown discuss the importance of providing cultural and racial equity to Portland Public School's students experiencing significant mental health concerns as well as the findings of her academic research on Mexican American males counter stories of educational success.

Koreen is a vice principal for Portland Dart ( Day and Residential Treatment) School Program where she is a strong advocate and leader for racial equity. She is also a doctoral student at Lewis and Clark College in the Educational Leadership for Social Justice Program. Her research is on the Mexican American adolescent males counter stories.

GirlStrength: Free holistic self defense courses for girls in the Portland area.

Bread and Roses welcomes GirlStrength, a local organization offering free comprehensive self-defense courses to girls throughout the Portland area. Their mission is to empower girls, demystify fear, and teach verbal assertiveness and physical self-defense skills. Since 2008, GirlStrength has taught 2,300 girls holistic self-defense and personal safety training.

In June, GirlStrength will offer a special intensive training for elementary, middle and high school teachers and counselors who are interested in keeping girls safe and reducing violence in their schools. Licensed teachers can apply to receive 10 credit hours of PSU Continuing Education Credit for Professional Development.

Spanish Immersion School Program's funds are being cut in Portland! Hear from mother and community organizer Savannah Paz about the actions parents are taking to save their children's education on Bread and Roses Friday May 25th at 6pm.

Back in February the city of Philadelphia's school system announced the closing of 40 public school to be replaced by privately owned charter schools. This announcement received very little to no coverage by the local or national media. It appears that this pattern is not new and is repeating itself all over the nation. Here in Portland, Atkinson elementary school and its students and families are protesting Portland Public School's budget cuts. You can hear all about it on your community radio station KBOO!

The popularity of nail salons and beauty spas is very high. But how much of the beauty we buy is toxic? And what are the work conditions like behind the aroma-therapeutic fog?
We will hear from Lisa Fu, Program Director for the Californian Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative. She will introduce us to the mostly immigrant women  who work in the salons, to their work conditions and to the toxic substances both they and their customers are exposed to. We will explore what can be done to improve that reality.

Guantanamo Family Stories-3

British-born Mozzam Begg spent a total of 3 years imprisoned at US-run prison camps at Guantanamo, Bagram and Kandahar. His book, Enemy Combatant, details the horrendous conditions he suffered, including 2 years in solitary confinement. He also writes about relations with US prison guards and interrogators. Since his release, Mozzam Begg has campaigned tirelessly for the closure of Guantanamo Bay. In this interview with Bread and Roses, Mr. Begg talks about his family's activism during his imprisonment.

Activist, poet and healer Sunni Patterson speaks with Bread & Roses from the Tenth Annual V-Day celebration in New Orleans.  The annual V-Day event is an international celebration of ending violence against women and girls, and this year honors the women of New Orleans and the Gulf South.  Ms. Patterson, a native of New Orleans, was part of a panel that presented at the V-Day events on April 11.       This audio includes a poem and interview.

Community Runs Free Adult Health Clinic

The North by Northeast Community Health Center opened in response to the medical needs of Hurricane Katrinia survivors and of the medically uninsured here in Portland.  This audio features interviews with Dr. Jill Ginsberg, Pastor Mary Overstreet Smith, and Suzy Jeffreys a year and a half after the center's opening.  They describe the North by Northeast Community Health Center and its roots in taking action in the face of injustice.
