THOUSANDS TURNED OUT OVER THE WEEKEND TO MOURN THE LOSS OF CELILO FALLS, OBLITERATED EXACTLY 50 YEARS AGO BY THE DALLES DAM.

TACOMA PORT PROTEST

THE PORT OF TACOMA HAS BEEN DRAWING PROTESTS THE FIRST FEW WEEKS OF MARCH DUE TO SHIPMENTS OF STRYKER COMBAT VEHICLES TO IRAQ FROM THAT PORT.
THE STRYKER IS AN ARMORED VEHICLE, MUCH LIKE A TANK. THE MILITARY MOVED THEIR SHIPPING OPERATIONS TO TACOMA IN AN APPARENT ATTEMPT TO EVADE EARLIER PROTESTS AT THE PORT OF OLYMPIA.
MARCH 7th MARKED A SUCCESS FOR PROTESTERS WALLY CUDDEFORD, CAITLIN ESWORTHY AND JEFF BERRYHILL, WHEN A PIERCE COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE DISMISSED FELONY ASSAULT CHARGES AGAINST ALL THREE.
HOWEVER, CUDDEFORD WAS FORCIBLY ARRESTED ONCE AGAIN, THIS TIME DURING A TACOMA CITY COUNCIL MEETING IN WHICH HE REFUSED TO STOP READING A PREPARED STATEMENT.

PORTLAND PLAN TO CUT FUEL CONSUMPTION IN HALF

A MUNICIPAL PLAN FOR PORTLAND TO CUT FUEL CONSUMPTION IN HALF BY THE YEAR 2030 IS BEING CONSIDERED BY PORTLAND COMMISSIONERS, AND IS EXPECTED TO PASS.
THE CUTS WILL COME FROM TRANSFERRING MUNICIPAL VEHICLES TO ALTERNATIVE FUELS, AS WELL AS ASKING CITIZENS TO REDUCE CONSUMPTION.
THE CITY WILL ALSO BE INVESTING FURTHER IN BIOFUELS.

AT REED COLLEGE ON MARCH 7th, PALESTINIANS MOHAMMED KHATIB AND FERYAL ABU HAIKAL COMPLETED A CROSS-COUNTRY SPEAKING TOUR THAT TOOK THEM TO 23 CITIES. KHATIB AND HAIKAL BOTH LIVE IN WEST BANK COMMUNITIES THREATENED BY DESTRUCTION TO MAKE WAY FOR NEW ISRAELI SETTLEMENTS.
AT REED, THEY TALKED ABOUT THE NON-VIOLENT EFFORTS BY THOUSANDS OF PALESTINIANS AND HUNDREDS OF ISRAELIS TO BLOCK THE SEIZURE OF PALESTINIAN LANDS.
