Ellen Lesperance was Eva Lake's guest on August 19th. Lespernace will show at Adams and Ollman in September. This was the final show for Lake, who leaves KBOO.

James Lavadour was Eva Lake's guest on August 5th. He has a show up at PDX Contemporry this month.

Elise Wagner was Eva Lake's guest on July 8th. She had a show at Butters Gallery.

Theresa Weil is doing a project called "Because She Cares," paintings of leaders in the non profit world. She was our guest in July 1, 2014.

Eva Lake  interviewed Sean Healy on June 17th. He currently has a show at the Elizabeth Leach Gallery.

Lisa Kaser and Grace Weston were our guests on April 8th. They had a show called Unfamiliar Faces at Waterstone Gallery.

This coming Tuesday our guests on Art Focus will be Anna Solcaniova King and Graylan King, who own and direct Anka Gallery. Anka is a big space at the Everett Station Lofts. They are able to present several shows at once, most of them of emerging artists.

In keeping with the current theme at Art Focus of the personalities behind art spaces - Blake Shell will join us. She is the curator at the Archer Gallery at Clark College and an artist in her own right. Currently the Archer Gallery has work up by Dan Gilsdorf and Peter Happel Christian. On the 11th of January, the Archer joins a group of community college galleries exhibiting Perimeter: We Live Here Now. These exhibitions feature works by artists from outside the USA who now live here.

Jennifer StootsLately Art Focus has been looking at people who operate art spaces, many of them alternative. But what about those who operate sans space? People who make things happen unattached to real estate? Jennifer Stoots is a prime example. She is a photography specialist, advising clients and collectors, appraising artworks, curating exhibitions, writing and lecturing. She also represents artists, including Stu Levy, who has a show up at Augen Gallery right now. Jennifer will be my guest this coming Tuesday, the 21st of December.

Art Focus continues its series on local art spaces. Lately we're consumed with pop-up galleries which are taking advantage of all the vacant real estate. Tiffany Ruth has a regular gallery in NW Portland called T. Ruth Artspace. It is showing Chelsea Rose this month, who has created prints of bodypainting. Those two will be on the radio with me tomorrow. Tiffany Ruth is also masterminding pop-up galleries in the NW Thurman area, with an artwalk every third Thursday.

Artists are taking over shuttered storefronts, transforming them into exhibition spaces. The top floor of Pioneer Place, once a hopeful shopping mall, was empty. Now we have Place, a group of galleries featuring installation and work from PNCA students. Gabe Flores and Gary Wiseman are curators behind the project and they will be my guests this Tuesday on Art Focus.

This week Marilyn Murdoch will be our guest. Marilyn is a well known collector. She also has , considered by many to be the best framing in town. The choice there will make your mouth water. She maintains Artery and Murdoch Collections, where she exhibits and sells work out of her private collection. Perhaps where she made the biggest impact with artists was Guestroom, where local curators stepped up and created different kinds of exhibitions.

 Todd Tubutis of the Director of Blue Sky Gallery was our guest on Art Focus. We covered the current Robert Frank show, Painkiller. We also talked about other shows at Blue Sky and his own path to the gallery.

Painkiller is an original exhibition of 48 Polaroid images by groundbreaking photographer Robert Frank taken from the 1970s through the present. Blue Sky closely collaborated with Frank in selecting photographs to be reproduced in a special series of enlarged prints for this show. Considered one of the most influential figures in the history of photography, Frank has redefined the aesthetic of both the still and the moving image via his pictures and films. Blue Sky is proud to present Frank’s work again in Portland, having first shown his photographs in 1981.

New Avenues for Youth Public Art Project

Local homeless youth are collaborating with artists and businesses to beautify our town, via New Avenues for Youth.

Billions and Billions of People collaborative art Installation is transforming a construction site into a work of art. With the vision and support from a premier real estate development company, TMT Development, thirty local homeless youth served by New Avenues for Youth had the unique opportunity to work alongside an internationally famed artist, earn a paycheck and feel connected to the city they call home.


That artist would be Chris Johanson. He joined us (via phone) - plus the Associate Executive Director Sean Suib and two of the youth participants  - on Art Focus.
