Elise Wagner was Eva Lake's guest on July 8th. She had a show at Butters Gallery.

Theresa Weil is doing a project called "Because She Cares," paintings of leaders in the non profit world. She was our guest in July 1, 2014.

Eva Lake  interviewed Sean Healy on June 17th. He currently has a show at the Elizabeth Leach Gallery.

Weaver Chapin talks about the current show This Is War! Graphic Arts from the Great War  which runs now through Dec 14, 2014. She will highlight posters and prints that range from the build up to the war, including propaganda posters from several perspectives, as well as scenes of horror recollected in the tranquility of the war's aftermath.

Interview with Don Pyle about Trouble in the Camera Club Photo Exhibit at PMOMA Oct 3rd
Don Pyle is a Toronto musician, producer, artist and author. 

His book Trouble In The Camera Club, published by ECW Press in 2011, documents his photographs and experiences of the birth of punk in Toronto from 1976 - 1980. Erin Yanke interviews him about his punk rock past and present, the queer culture of his youth, and Donna Summer, as well as his photographs and his art show that will be at the Portland Museum of Modern Art from Sept 30 - Oct 5.

In his Out-of-Focus Talking Slideshow, which will take place at Mississippi Records on October 3, 2014 at 8pm, Don Pyle gives a guided tour through photographs from his book Trouble In The Camera Club and more, looking at details in the background, things going on outside the frame and blurry asides.

The Oregon Cultural Trust has given a grant to Disjecta to produce the (now rather homeless) Oregon Biennial. It will be called Portland 2010. I had Cynthia Kirk from the Trust, Bryan Suereth from Disjecta and Cris Moss the curator as my guests on Art Focus at KBOO. Kirk also spoke about "A Day of Culture" coming up on the 8th.

Tom Cramer

Tom Cramer has a new show opening at Laura Russo this week. He will be my guest tomorrow on Art Focus. His exhibitions keep pushing forward into new territory and this one in particular has a big variety of approaches. Some seems Byzantine; his silver and gold is better than ever. One work is like an oil slick, reminiscent of Arts and Crafts and Tiffany. There are loads of Art Nouveauish sexy loops and plantlike shapes. He's doing this all-over wood burning thing too which is subtle from afar and intense close up. There are a few pieces which are really 60s - in that optimistic, almost fabric/fashion Marimekko way. I love it all. It seems to me that wood is his arena, he really owns it and finds new ways to work with it.

Mark Menjivar

The Works 2009

Here is an interview with two artists: Fawn Krieger and Jesse Hayward, recorded during the construction of their respective installations at Time Based Arts Festival site for "The Works". For TBA '09, PICA (Portland Institute for Contemporary Arts) gained access to the defunct Washington High School. Using the old theater and two complete floors, artists set up a variety of installations in former classroom spaces. The artists interviewd here are only two of about a dozen different installations. Though TBA '09 events are over, the galleries are open at Washington High School through October. Visit PICA.ORG for more details.

Fawn Krieger is a New York based artist and was invited for residency to produce the installation interviewed in this piece. She calls it "National Park" and you can learn more about it and see photos at www.fawnkrieger.com.

Jesse Hayward is based in Portland and produces interactive installations that often speak to the playfulness of art and craft. You can also learn more about his work at www.jessehayward.com.

Also, notice an original short piece of Musique Concrete in between the interviews. I produced this on behalf of Fawn, who provided the audio samples.

Two days before the big opening reception for Time Based Arts Festival 2009, the "big three" curators of TBA joined guest host of Art Focus, Sean Ongley, for a special program discussing the event. Erin Boberg and Kristan Kennedy were live in the studio, while guest artistic director Cathy Edwards joined us from New Haven by telephone. Special guest and TBA '08 performer, Mike Daisey also joined us by phone.

Michelle Ramin and Jason Doize

This week on Art Focus my guest will be Michelle Ramin, who has a show up at Falsefront called Need it/Got it - along with the director of Falsefront, Jason Doizé. Falsefront is a curious space – in a neighborhood full of homes, it looks like it must have been a storefront at one time. Inside it looks like a regular gallery (which I confess to liking). The exhibition has a closing party this week.
