The World Meets Africa

Over the years there have been many fruitful musical collaborations between Africa and the rest of the world.  Sometimes as the result of expatriate African artists working in Europe or America.  Other times it's been westerners traveling to the continent to work with African artists.  We'll hear Indian vocalist Kiran Ahluwalia's recent work with Tinariwen (she will be here at the Alberta Rose Theatre April 24th)...  Also, American guitarists Henry Kaiser & David Lindly recording with Rossy of Madagascar...  Malian kora maestro Toumani Diabaté working with Taj Mahal, the Flamenco group Ketama, and avant-jazz trombonist Roswell Rudd...  American jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater recorded in Bamako with local luminaries...  Bluegrass/jazz banjo player

On today's installment of Africa O-Yé! we concentrate for the most part on the quieter, darker, acoustic side of African music, some quite traditional, some quite modern, but all with deep cultural roots.  host: Andy Hosch

Today on Africa O-Ye!, we pay our respects to Tabu Ley Rochereau & Nelson Mandela (RIP) with a celebratory melange of Afro-Latin Rumba Jazz from Congo/Zaire, a couple of inspiring keyboard instrumentals from Rex Rabanye of South Africa (with one featuring an added Mandela overdub), a fire-hot cut off of Teranga Beat's oustanding new Mar Seck collection, a gentler foray into some new and archival acoustic guitar songs, and a couple of contemporary club and/or pop tracks peppered in here and there, not to mention at least two songs spreading their sweetly upbeat holiday tidings. Happy New Year!

SOUTH AFRICAN FREEDOM SONGS. Music has played an important role in liberation struggles the world over. In the South African struggle against apartheid, song was especially powerful. Celebrating the life and work of Nelson Mandela, this week on Africa O-Yé! we look back at this musical legacy. We will hear selections from Abdullah Ibrahim and Sathima Bea Benjamin, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, and many more. In the mid-section of the program [starting at about 1:30] we will air an hour-long radio documentary 'South African Freedom Songs' produced by Lucie Pagé in 2000. The documentary features the voices of Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Ronnie Kasrils, and many others. This week's host: Andy Hosch

Stern's Africa has recently released a terrific retrospective on  the music of Joseph Kabasele, 'Le Grand Kallé -curated by Ken Braun.  During the first hour on this week's Africa O-Yé!  we will explore highlights from this collection.  Listening to this new compilation inspired me to revisit other vintage Zaïrean rumba too, so I've put together a playlist of some of my favorites for the second hour of the show.   host: Andy Hosch

Kabasele selections are from "Le Grand Kallé", Stern's Africa, 2013
