This Fall Membership Drive installment of Africa Oyé will feature exclusively music of Mali, West Africa from Kanaga System Krush.  KSK is an independent record label, operating on a fair-trade principle, focused on the preservation and promotion of traditional music from West Africa. By bringing this music to the world market, KSK is opening new channels to an old tradition, as well as providing direct support to the carriers of this ancient knowledge. KSK has produced and released ten albums over the last five years, and on today's program you will hear selections from most of them,  including the latest from Lobi Traore, "Bwati Kono", copies of which will be offered as thank-you gifts for new or renewing KBOO members who pledge during the show.

Ethiopiques, part 2

Next time on Africa Oyé, the second of two programs focusing on the Ethiopiques series: 27 volumes of Ethiopian music released over the last 14 years on the Paris-based world music label, Buda Musique. Most of this material was recorded during the 'golden age' of Ethiopian music, in the 1960s and '70s before the long civil war seriously disrupted all elements of Ethiopian society. Also in the series are archival recordings of traditional music, and a few recent recordings too, some involving collaborations between European or American musicians and some of the classic Ethiopian artists. Many listeners may be familiar with a few of the featured artists, such as Mahmoud Ahmed, Mulatu Astatke, or Getachew Mekurya, but there is much, much more hidden within this marvelous series.

A Tribute to Tony Alabi (Firefly)

We are sorry to announce that Tony Alabi, host of "Africa O-Ye" (known on the air as Firefly) died on Monday, January 24, of a serious stroke. Tony had been a KBOO volunteer and programmer for over fifteen years.  In the late 1990s, we were conducting an outreach campaign in Portland to recruit new volunteers for music programs from around the world, such as Africa, Indonesia, India, Hawaii, and Korea.  Tony came to KBOO with a proposal for an African program, which started in 1998.  He also was a music promoter in Portland, and brought in many African and reggae bands, and was a participant in the Homowa African Music Festival.

Music of the influential Nigerian-born drummer Tony Allen.  Instrumental in forming the foundations of Afrobeat, Allen was drummer & musical director of Fela Kuti's band, Africa 70.  Immersed in his youth with the sounds of traditional Yoruba music, Juju, and Highlife, Allen adaptded these rhythms to the drum kit, with a masterful technique informed by such jazz icons as Max Roach and Art Blakey, and a deep soulful groove.  Today's program will feature Allen's work from the time of his 1979 split with Fela through the present.  host: Andy Hosch

Ouza & ses OuzettesAfrica (excerpt)Ouza & ses Ouzettes 1975 - 1990P.A.M.
Vintage Senegalese popular music, mostly from the 1970s & '80s.  More than any other country in West Africa, Senegal is strongly influenced by Cuban music, and this connection is clearly heard in much of what we will listen to on today's show.  This week's host: Andy Hosch
