A Different Nature

A Different Nature Mission Statement: A Sustained Explorations of New, Experimental Music and Sonic Art
A Different Nature is a curatorial program of genre-defying avant garde music and spoken word that champions historic and modern sound art and spotlights, new, emergent experimental music and audio art generally not heard anywhere else.
The program's format provides the space for deep listening to pieces not confined to pop song lengths and shows are generally focused on an artist, school of music or discipline, record label or art movement.

A Different Nature is a collaborative effort of the ADN Collective, who each curate a show every week on an informal rotating basis, or a group show, depending on the subject at hand.

A Different Nature was founded in the late Seventies by Richard Francis, who fearlessly championed new music and the unheard Avant Garde. His programs went into exhaustive detail on individual artists, labels and musical disciplines. He also spearheaded many important events on the air, such as the 2001 and 2008 Dada and Surrealism festivals that dominated the airwaves for days on end and involved many in the local avant garde community as well as many KBOO programmers.

Richard passed away in 2009 but it's our hope to carry on with his mission of introducing listeners to unheard new music as a collective of his collaborators and listeners.

Long live Papa Dada!

Airs every Monday from 8 to 10 PM

CLASSICS, ANTIQUES AND CURIOS:  ATLANTA (ACTS OF GOD), an opera by ROBERT ASHLEY.  The mythic tale of fleet-footed Atalanta and her suitor Hippomenes with his three golden apples is picked up centuries later with Hippomenes and apples replaced by three suitors from our times:  Max Ernst (surrealist painter), Willard Reynolds (shaman storyteller) and Bud Powell (compower pianist).  Recorded live in English and Italian at the Teatro Olimpico, Rome, in 1985 with Ashley's usual cast of performers including Thomas Buckner, Jacqueline Humbert and "Blue" Gene Tyranny.

CONTEMPORARY THEREMIN.  LYDIA KAVINA is well on her way to becoming the Clara Rockmore of our times, using her virtuoso abilities at theremin to present serious contemporary compositions for theremin and ensembles, sometimes using her technique to blend her instrument in so thoroughly with the others that it is easy to forget you are listening to an ensemble with theremin.  Performing with her also on theremin, is Barbara Bucholz.

MUSIQUE CONCRETE: HERBERT DISTEL, a multi-media Swiss artist best known for making large eggs and his Museum of Drawers, created two concrete masterpieces in the 1980s.  Die Reise (The Journey) is created entirely from the sounds of a train noisily clattering through various acoustic landscapes (and processing envelopes) traversing Germany.  La Stazione is an "experimental opera in two acts" created from the many sounds resonating within the great Central Station in Milan Italy, heavily processed, whose five parts are based on intensely reverberating PA announcements.

"Inner Cities" by Alvin Curran -- Part II

"Inner Cities" by Alvin Curran--Part II. Curran's more recent pieces have tended towards complex, often unfocused collage; regularly using audio and musical material one would never imagine side-by-side except in a piece by Curran. With "Inner Cities", Curran does this combined with stretches of extreme minimalism in a collection of 11 compositions for piano, each dedicated to a colleague such as: Margaret Leng Tan, Trisha Brown, Eve Egoyan, Frederic Rzewski and even the pianist you will hear performing: Daan Vandewalle. At over four hours it is impossible to air all of it in even two programs. But we will have aired the bulk of "Inner Cities" this and last week.

In 1980 Carlos, whose electronic interpretations of some western classical pieces caught the world's ears when used in the soundtrack for "A Clockwork Orange," used her synthesizer to take on "The Brandenburg Concertos" by J.S. Bach, the man who composed baroque moire patterns for sound. On this show you can hear the astounding results, and in the remastered recordings released in 2002.

Classics, Antiques and Curios:" Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me
Yet."  This classic Gavin Bryars B-side to  "The Sinking of
the titanic" on Eno's first 1976 Obscure label release began in 1970
with the looped prerecorded voice of an old tramp singing solo to which
the instruments of a chamber orchestra were slowly and sympathetically
added, creating a powerfully moving experience for even the
non-believer.  Tonight that recording plus a 1993 reinterpretation
which takes things even further as Bryars layers in the original
ensemble, but then slowly adds full strings, a full orchestra, a chorus
and finally Tom Wiats.

Interview with Homer Flynn of The Residents

program:
A Different Nature
program date:
Mon, 02/18/2013

For forty years, the San Francisco Avant-Garde band The Residents have basked in relative obscurity, much of it self-imposed. Their earliest modus operandi had them creating works under their 'theory of obscurity', first coined by N. Senada, who may or may not be an actual person. One aspect of the theory is that a work is created with the intent of never releasing a work until every participant has forgotten about it - or something like that.

Another aspect of the Residents is that they've kept their real identity a secret for many decades, with a few people speaking on their behalf in a business capacity who may or may not be Residents themselves.. Hmmm..

We did, however, manage to get Homer Flynn, The Resident's creative director and visual Major Domo on the phone, while he was, uh, helping the band on the Eastern leg of their Wonder of Weird 40th Anniversary tour.

Homer was more than generous with his time and lots of questions get answered, including a long-time rumour around KBOO's history.

But I'll let you listen to that yourself.

Akira Ifukube would have been 100 years old on May 31, 2014. Born on the Japanese island of Hokkaido, son of a Shinto priest, legend has it that Ifukube decided to become a composer at the age of 14 upon hearing a radio performance of Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring".  Largely self-taught as a composer, Ifukube's big break came in 1935, when his first orchestral piece, "Japanese Rhapsody", won first prize in an international contest for young composers.  His first film score (End of the Silver Mountains) was in 1947. Over the next fifty years, he would compose more than 250 film scores, the most famous of which was his 1954 music for Ishiro Honda's "Godzilla". Ifukube also created Godzilla's trademark roar – produced by rubbing a resin-covered leather glove along the loosened strings of a double bass. Despite his financial success as a film composer, Ifukube's first love had always been his work as a classical composer. His compositions for the two genres cross-fertilized each other.  Akira Ifukube died on February 8, 2006 at the age of 91.  On this installment of A Different Nature, we listened to examples of both Ifukube's film music and concert pieces.  host: Andy Hosch

Tonight on A DIFFERENT NATURE -- a tribute to freshly departed experimental music/prose theatre genius ROBERT ASHLEY who died last month just after completing his last opera, "Crash" (which opens this Thursday at the Whitney Museum of American Art in NYC). He was 83. Listen to what made him so important to artists in new music, poetry, and experimental, multi-media theatre (beginning in the 1950s!) as we attempted to present his most influential works, in 2 hours.

A TRIBUTE to PANDIT PRAN NATH --

A 3 HOUR special on A Different Nature (To read more about Pandit Pran Nath and the American avant-garde underground, here is an excellent article -- http://www.bidoun.org/magazine/20-bazaar/lord-of-the-drone-pandit-pran-nath-and-the-american-underground-by-alexander-keefe/.)

The first 2 hours were dedicated to 4 compositions --4 Portland area composers offering their piece in tribute to or inspired by Pandit Pran Nath

1.  Air Objects by John Berendzen   24:30

2.  Planetary Sine Wave Organ by Derek Ecklund  30:30

3.  Referent  by Scott Goodwin  24:00

4.  Raindrop Garden by Matt Carlson  10:00

The last hour of the broadcast was indeed very special, even historic, as Michael Stirling sang/performed a raga live in the KBOO studios with accompaniment from Derek Ecklund and Kelly Jennings, each playing a tambura, and Aran Adams on tablas.

Here's what Michael had to say about this raga:  "i dedicate my offering to Shamsudin Faridi Desai, a music family friend from Dehli who passed on 8/16 - one of the last living masters of the Binkar in the tradition of Mian Bande Ali Khan - the great Binkar of the Kirana tradition.  He and sarangi virtuoso and Khalifa of the Kirana Gharana, Ustad Hafizullah Khan were inspiriations and their classical music will never be duplicated - as Terry Riley said of Faridi, a Ghandarva!

To listen, enjoy, and paint the inside of your mind with peace and the walls of your home with a deep resonant ommmmmmmmmmmm, click on this : http://www.soundmaps.net/pandit_pran_nath.html

have a nice trip.
